How Editing Pimples Changed My Life

While editing at the studio, one of my coworkers peeked over my shoulder to see how the headshots she had seen me take minutes before came out. I was zoomed in at 400X, removing a few blemishes, so I felt the need to say, “Everyone has bumps and blemishes.” It got me thinking about how editing other people’s blemishes changed my perspective on life.

When I was twelve years old,

I teased my older sister about having a pimple. I joke now that bad karma from that less-than-stellar display of sibling love determined that I would be cursed with the embarrassing problem for my tender teen years and most of my young adult life. I battled with acne for 20+ years. When I started my photography business in 2016 at 35, I still had issues with it. So, being as self-conscious as I was, I went to great lengths to edit blemishes for others.

Over time, editing hundreds of people’s skin,

I realized that everyone has bumps and blemishes—EVERYONE. That realization helped me feel less embarrassed. I wasn’t alone.

Vulnerability Is Key

We rarely allow people to get close enough to see our blemishes and personality flaws because we believe we are the only ones with problems—that they will cause others to cast us out from the group. We spend hours on social media watching the curated highlight reels of people’s lives—the professional photos with the pimples removed. We must let our guard down and move closer to see that we all have scars and imperfections, part of what brings us together. When we allow others to see our struggles, it opens the door to let them in to help—and to share their own stories of life struggles.
