Seeing the Light: On accepting change…

1 Way It Applies to Life & Business

Knowing the camera bodies I had been shooting on for the past 5 years had racked up a combined shot count of over 1 million photos (!!), I decided to take the plunge and replace all of my gear with the new mirrorless technology. — I don’t take chances with gear on someone’s wedding day.

Back in November, there was a great sale going on and I wanted to take advantage since it would be a large investment. I bought two new camera bodies and 2 of the key lenses I would need for wedding photography….the 50mm, f/1.2 and the 24-70mm, f/2.8.

Since there is talk of DSLR cameras being on the out (like film and Polaroid) I figured it was a necessary move. And, I wanted to make the move over the winter when my shooting calendar was light to give me time to practice.

Well, if I’m being honest, I didn’t really want to learn the new cameras. I liked my old cameras. They still did a great job and I resented the fact that this new technology was forcing me to spend all this money and make this change (of course, they come with a whole new lineup of lenses too).

So, I let them sit in unopened boxes for over 3 months. Yup! Brand new (very expensive) “toys” I should have been excited about, just sat there while I pushed off accepting the fact that I would have to be a little clumsy for a bit while I learned the new gear.

Eventually, everyone in my house was sick (ridiculous) forcing me to cancel ALL of my plans for two weeks straight. I had no other excuses…I opened the first box.

Actually, I lie. I let my daughter open the box. I was THAT resentful that I didn’t even care to open the box myself!

I turned it on…and fell in love. About 2 hours and 3 Youtube videos later, I was feeling pretty proficient with it. While I’m still just a hair slower than I was with my old cameras, the new upgrades easily make up for it and I know with just a little more practice, I’ll be even faster than before with the new capabilities at my fingertips.

Why did I wait?

Change is hard. So many “what ifs” and “I don’t knows.”

If you are in the same boat with something in your life, I feel you!

Needless to say, I’m pretty happy with the change now that I forced myself through the process. As they say, “The other side of fear is freedom!”

1 Question to Ponder

What’s holding YOU back?

Is there something in your life learning more about is necessary but you are putting off?
